Deep Dive
Analyse an exact time window with trends across every dimension.
Deep Dive answers narrower questions than the Dashboard: what happened between 14:00 and 16:00 during the launch, and which dimension moved. It differs from the Dashboard in three ways — an exact start/end range rather than whole days, more metrics, and every breakdown plotted over time rather than as a single total.
Open it from the tracker sidebar. The range defaults to the last 24 hours.
Time range
Deep Dive takes an explicit start and end datetime, to the minute. Bucket size follows the range: a two-hour window buckets finely, a two-year window buckets by year.
Stat cards
Eight metrics, each with a sparkline of its own trend across the range and a comparison badge:
| Card | Notes |
|---|---|
| Visitors | Total sessions. |
| Unique Visitors | Distinct visitors. |
| Referred | Arrived from an external non-search site. |
| Organic | Direct or search traffic with no attribution tags. |
| Returning | First seen before this range. |
| Events | All events of all types. |
| Bounces | Closed sessions with exactly one event. |
| Avg Duration | Averaged over buckets containing data. |
Definitions are in Metrics.
The comparison badges here split the selected range in half and compare its second half against its first. Over a 24-hour range that is "the last 12 hours versus the 12 before". Widen or narrow the range and the comparison changes with it.
Visit types
A breakdown of the range's sessions by how they arrived, so you can see the mix rather than the totals — whether a spike came from campaigns, search, or returning visitors.
Event types
Volume by event type (pageview, event, scroll, click, input,
health) over the range. A sudden rise in health events is worth
investigating: see health events.
Visitors time-series
Sessions over the range as a line or bars, on the same explicit range as the rest of the screen.
Dimension charts
Four charts — Browsers, Devices, Operating Systems, Countries — each plotting its top values over time rather than as one total. This is what the Dashboard's pie charts cannot show: not "Safari is 30% of traffic" but "Safari traffic collapsed at 09:00 on Tuesday", which is how you catch a browser-specific regression or a regional outage.
Only the top values in each dimension are plotted, keeping the chart readable on sites with a long tail of user agents.
When to use Deep Dive instead of the Dashboard
| Question | Screen |
|---|---|
| How was yesterday? | Dashboard |
| What happened during the 20-minute deploy window? | Deep Dive |
| Which countries send the most traffic? | Dashboard |
| Did traffic from one country drop off a cliff, and when? | Deep Dive |
| How many people are on the site right now? | Dashboard (Active) |
| Did bounce rate move after the redesign shipped? | Deep Dive |
